Year Three of Remote Work — What Lives Under Your Desk Now

When you first set up a home workspace, the space under your desk was probably empty. Over time, a PC tower moved in. Then a power strip. An air purifier. Cardboard boxes. A half-used shopping bag. At some point, the space left for your legs shrank to just enough to tuck in two feet[^1].

According to Size Korea's Korean body dimension survey, the average height for Korean adults is about 173 cm for men and about 160 cm for women[^3]. Most domestic desks, however, are still 72–75 cm tall. At that desk height, a person of average build would need a chair as low as 43–47 cm just to place their feet flat on the floor.

In practice, the opposite happens. Chairs rise. The space below fills with cables and household objects. Legs spend eight hours a day not quite finding their place.

BIFMA, the North American standards body for office furniture, includes knee and foot clearance as a basic design principle for computer workspaces[^4]. It generally recommends clearance of at least 510 mm wide and 380 mm deep beneath the work surface.

That ideal rarely holds up in a small home office. So the realistic alternative is to place a point of support inside whatever clearance exists. That is exactly the job of a footrest. Instead of asking the legs to decide where to go every few minutes, it says: this is your place[^5].
